The four orders that matter

Order types are the controls in the cockpit. Using the wrong one under pressure is how a small planned loss becomes an account-ending one.

OrderWhat it doesGuaranteesUse it for
MarketFills immediately at best available priceFill, not priceGetting out fast
LimitFills at your price or betterPrice, not fillPatient entries and targets
StopBecomes a market order when price is touchedExit, not priceProtective stop losses
Stop-limitBecomes a limit order when price is touchedPrice, not fillControlled entries, never stops
Never use a stop-limit as a stop loss

In a fast move the limit can be skipped entirely, leaving you in a losing position with no protection at all. Protective stops should be stop-market orders.
